Sachs Madass: A Passerby Review

My first encounter with this unique motorcycle was in the parking lot of Aksara Store at Kemang. I was parking my motorcycle, aJupiter MX, when my eyes caught the sight of this bike and its striking yellow color. It was like a moment of revelation. It really stood out among the so many motorbikes parked on its either side.

Sachs Madass motorbike is nothing new to me. I have seen it before in Motor Plus and other automotive publications reviews. However, I did not really appreciate it until I saw it with my own very eyes at Aksara parking lot. There, in front of me, the bike stood just the way it has been described in the reviews I read. It is a unique bike with masculine taste and the look of a cub bike. In Britain and USA, this bike gains an entry of scooter. In Indonesia, we simply call it “Motor Bebek” because of its engine position.

The color of this bike was absolutely eye catching. Whether parked or on the move, it will not miss anybody’s attention. Yellow color is painted from its front tyre mudguard to its swingarm. As far as I know, yellow is the standard color of this bike. But it is not the only one. There are other options such as black and red. Red is my favorite color but the yellow  on this bike does not look wrong at all.

In terms of design, this bike poses a radical look. While the design is not new at all, it smashingly set itself apart from any other bikes, including mine, with its minimalist appearance. As shown in the photos below, Sachs Madass does not use any fairing or cowl of whatsoever. It adopts naked bike style. The bike frame, big tubular pipes, is not only to place Sachs engine but also to serve as fuel tank. The fuel tank cap is right behind the steering axis. Open it and fill’er up. Expanding the bike’s main frame as fuel tank allows Madass to maintain its weight low. With this way, it does not have to provide a special room in its sub-frame for fuel tank, a common practice in cub bikes. Moreover, the tubular chassis design extends to swingarm part. Rather than giving a different swingarm design, Madass retains its tubular format. Interestingly, the swingarm takes the shape of banana racing swingarm. Additionally, the big frame provides a very masculine look. This is an ideal choice for guys who want a tough look motorcycle.

Madass minimalist look does not stop in chassis design. The engine is neatly tucked under the main frame. It is a 125 cc machine with horizontal configuration, similar to Honda’s C-70. The long chrome exhaust pipe is beautifully curved on the right side of the bike and finally ends right under its saddle. Its long muffler is a reminder of the great Ducati 916. Speedometer is a digital one with two lamps for right and left turn signal lamps. For lighting, Sachs put on two small but powerful headlights in a stack arrangement. The bike designer also designed the rear light in a slanted manner, applying LED technology as well. As for riders saddle, it is not wide but thick enough for two passengers. I do not know if it is comfy for a long ride. The handle bar is wide and allow its rider to be comfortable in a long ride but may not be so in a heavy traffic situation or in a tight twisty road. Braking is no sweat since it has front and rear disc brake which will supply ample stopping power.

Nevertheless, the best thing I like from this bike is its air scoop which really exists. There is not only one but two of it. Air scoop is a device that channels cool air stream generated by the forward movement of a vehicle into airbox which later feeds it to carburetor. This is not new in superbike world but in cub bikes. Usually, bike manufacturers only give an airbox in every unit of cub bike. Air supply is provided by a small rubber pipe placed right under the bikes frame. Two air scoops on Sachs Madass guarantee a constant air pressure to carburetor and, as speed increases, it will make Madass rolls even faster than any other bike of its class. These air scoops are the best features because they enable the bike to overcome its small engine capacity against a bigger capacity bike, say 150 cc. I’m not surprised if this bike can match Satria F 150in a short drag race.

Though Madass uses a small engine 125 cc and has a cub look, it uses sport bike suspension system. Front suspension is a full telescopic one, with a large diameter similar to Satria F. Rear suspension is an adjustable single shock with medium travel. Its diameter is also big, equals to Jupiter MX 135. I cannot tell if the suspension system is soft or hard but I think they are very promising for a daily ride around Jakarta city.

Sachs Madass is truly a genuine work of art for a small capacity motorbike. Its design is dazzling and its performance should also be great. I estimate the price could have been more than 15 million rupiah, $1600. Based on my brief observation, this bike is great for weekend ride but it is not so great for daily commuting vehicle. The reason? Simple. The lack of fairing will make Madass got dirty easily, especially during rainy season. Water or mud can easily splash on the bike’s frame or on the rider’s legs. On the lighter side, the naked desing makes it easy for its owner to wash it. Madass tubular frame design which is space efficient proves good in reducing weight.It serves as fuel tank and chassis at the same time. However, I predict that the bike will be heavy when the tank is full and it will be light when it is running low on fuel. That is exactly the weak point of this frame design. If the fuel is already half full, Madass will be too light. Will it be stable if it is running in high speed? Nevertheless, it is still a dream bike for any bike enthusiasts.
